There’s a reason witches have always been fascinated by the pointing hand. It’s not just a gesture – it’s a declaration of dominion. The hand of the witch has always been a directional instrument, a compass needle, a lightning rod, a weapon. A wand is just an extension of this, an extra tool to direct the flow – the real power is always in the Witches hands, not the tool. When you extend your finger toward the world, you’re not merely indicating direction; you’re commanding energy. You’re saying, this way, reality. You’re declaring jurisdiction. You’re saying: my will moves here. The problem is – we think when a spell takes it’s time, it’s because the Universe, ancient and half‑asleep, cracks an eye open to see what you think you’re doing – and being the cheeky creature it is, it often takes its sweet time to obey…how wrong is that statement!

Every spell uses power, even the ones that appear to flop like a damp tea towel. The old grimoires called it the Fundamental Failure Rate – a polite, dignified way of saying, “sometimes the cosmos is in a mood.” This Witch has learned, just like everything else, the old grimoires often housed tightly guarded hidden truths amongst blatant distraction side quests, they normally recorded their results for diagnostic purposes and technique fine-tuning as a practitioner…not exactly the complete “how to” parts. Even more importantly, the often gave wrong direction and theatrical performance instructions that either weren’t needed or we indeed code for the initiate who knew how to look beyond the literal (intentionally, and mostly for good reasons – but hey, I’m a rebel). The deeper truth is always that magick doesn’t fail, it recalibrates. Magick is not a vending machine. You don’t insert intention, press a button, and wait for your manifestation to clatter into the tray. Magick is a negotiation with forces older than language, older than the moon, older than the idea of “you.” They say negotiations can take time…but in case nobody has told you yet, it doesn’t have to.

It’s not distance that slows it down. You can absolutely have an instant effect on the other side of the world or even in another dimension. There are scientific experiments showing how fast (instant) particles in different locations can affect each other. The problem is they didn’t come with what I call “the human condition.” After a few decades of occult work, I can tell you this: instant magick is possible, but rare. Not because of distance – distance is truly irrelevant – but because most witches haven’t yet mastered the right combination of divine authority, agency, and the demand behind the instructions they’re sending.

You might set parameters in your spell like “by the next libation,” “within three moons,” “after the next storm.” And then you wait. You feel the lag. You start to wonder if you did something wrong. But what’s really happening is that the universe is rearranging itself around your intention, and that takes coordination. The elements are like cosmic stagehands, moving props, adjusting lighting, cueing the right emotional soundtrack. It’s not failure. It’s production time.

Especially long‑distance (though entirely not necessary but something most practitioners will face) magick – the kind you cast across continents, across emotional chasms, across the psychic fog that forms when someone is energetically constipated. You send your spell out like a raven, and then you wait. And wait. And wait. No caw. No feather. No sign. Just the void, humming like a refrigerator at 3 a.m.

Modern witches struggle with this because we’ve been trained by technology to expect immediacy. We are in the era of instant gratification and minimal attention spans, with impatience to boot. We want tracking numbers for our spells. We want “your manifestation is out for delivery.” We want the universe to behave like a customer service department. But the universe is not a customer service department, with the human condition as the order giver – universe is more like a labyrinth with a personality disorder.

So what really happens the moment you cast a spell? The fabric of reality begins to warp around your intention, but not just ‘because you say so.” Not because you forced it, but because you aligned with it. Magick doesn’t respond to desperation. It responds to coherence (read more on Why “High Frequency” isn’t enough & what you should really aim for!). When your will, your energy, your body, and your belief all point in the same direction – that’s when the universe starts rearranging itself like furniture in a haunted house.

It’s not because the rearranging takes time, it normally correlates to the fact your spell has to travel through layers of resistance – your own doubts, someone else’s free will, ancestral patterns, environmental noise, astrological weather, and the occasional cosmic traffic jam. Sometimes the spell hits a wall and ricochets. Sometimes it takes the scenic route. Sometimes it goes through customs. And sometimes – let’s be honest – the spell feels like it doesn’t land at all. Not because you’re weak, or unworthy, or “not high vibe enough,” but because magick is a living system. It has its own ecology. Some intentions are seedlings. Some are storms. Some are invasive species. Some are simply not meant to grow in the soil you’re standing on.

But here’s the part most witches never learn, the “failure” is often the most accurate feedback you’ll ever receive. Magick doesn’t lie. If a spell refuses to take root, it’s telling you something about the terrain. Maybe the timing is wrong. Maybe the target is wrong. Maybe the desire is wrong. Maybe the version of you who cast the spell is not the version of you who would survive receiving it.

So let’s look at some common points where most witches trip up, discernment and divine authority. Almost no witch I’ve met has the right level of both. That might rub people the wrong way, but I’m fine with that. I’m not here to flatter; I’m here to help you to investigate. Because when your spell feels like it’s not working, maybe it is – but your commands weren’t demands enough. You didn’t use the right level of psychopomp to attune your energetic self to the task at hand. You didn’t take advantage or the correspondences available (astronomical, astrological, archetypal, colours etc). Or, more commonly, you cast your “want” from the energetic signature of your wounding. And that, my dear, is a recipe for cosmic mischief. Let’s go deeper:

1. The Occult Mechanics of the Pointing Hand

What most witches don’t realise is that the pointing hand is not symbolic – it is anatomical magick. The index finger is the “projective digit,” the wand your body grew for you. In old initiatory lineages, apprentices were taught that the finger is a directional conduit: the bone acts as the rod, the tendon as the channel, the nail as the sigil‑tip. When you point, you are not gesturing – you are vectoring force. You are selecting a timeline, isolating a target, and issuing a directive. This is why sloppy pointing creates sloppy results. A wavering hand sends a wavering command. A decisive finger, however, cuts through the astral like a blade. The universe responds to clarity, not flapping.

What most witches don’t realise is that the pointing hand is not symbolic - it is anatomical magick. The index finger is the “projective digit,” the wand your body grew for you.

2. How to Set a Command (Not a Request)

A command in magick is not loud, dramatic, or theatrical. It is precise. It is the occult equivalent of a well‑written line of code. A command has three parts: the vector (where the energy is going), the voltage (how much authority you’re sending it with), and the verdict (the outcome you are declaring). Most witches only do the first part – they point vaguely at the situation and hope the universe fills in the rest like a cosmic intern. But magick doesn’t work like that. You must articulate the outcome with the same certainty you’d use when telling an over exciting and bordering on naughty, dog to sit. Not because the universe is a dog, but because your unconscious mind is, and it’s the one actually executing the spell. If your command sounds like a suggestion, your unconscious will treat it like one.

3. The Secret Teaching: Authority Is an Energetic Posture

In the old mystery schools, authority wasn’t taught as confidence, it was taught as posture. Not physical posture (though that helps), but energetic posture. Authority is the subtle shift from “I hope this works” to “this is already done.” It is the internal stance that collapses the gap between intention and manifestation. When your authority is intact, your command doesn’t travel outward – it detonates. It doesn’t wander through the astral looking for a place to land – it imprints itself onto the field instantly. This is why some witches can point a finger and watch reality rearrange itself like startled birds, while others point and get nothing but a faint psychic echo and a headache. Authority is the difference. And yes, it can be learned, but it cannot be faked. The universe knows the difference between a witch who is commanding and a witch who is cosplaying.

So, when you cast from your wounds, the universe hears you loud and clear – but it translates your pain, not your desire. So instead of the result you hoped for, you get your triggers wearing a different face. It’s the universe’s way of saying, “I hear you, my child. I love you. You’re right – you want to move on from that loop. So here’s your chance to change it.” Magick, after all, is agency and action. It’s not about begging the universe for mercy; it’s about commanding your own evolution.

The lag, then, isn’t punishment. It’s process. It’s the time between your declaration and your embodiment. The spell begins the moment you choose your will – not when the candle burns out, not when the moon hits the right angle, not when the target finally feels the shift. The moment you decide, the universe starts rearranging itself. The delay is the recalibration period, the cosmic equivalent of buffering while the divine downloads your new reality. But – and this is the accountability pieceif your divine authority is aligned, your agency is intact, your psychopomp is attuned, and your command is a demand, not a plea… the buffering can vanish. The magick can be instant.

Because the success of a spell depends on the practitioner, not on whether the universe is in a good enough mood to enact it now or wants a little sleep‑in. Here’s something not a lot of people are going to want to hear either *brace yourself for some brutal truth that may just change your spell casting forever* even the Gods are tools. They’re magnificent, ancient, powerful tools – but tools nonetheless. They amplify your will; they do not replace it. It is your responsibility to learn how to use them – and trust me, as energy forms, powerful and highly charged…they want to be used.

My point is, there are many different things to consider that can account for energetic lags, but accountability is at the root of any action you do – magickal or mundane. Seasoned witches don’t panic when a spell goes quiet. They listen. They observe. They adjust. They recast without shame. They treat magick like a craft, not a performance review. Because the real spell is not the candle, or the herbs, or the incantation. The real spell is the Witch. Your will is the engine. Your energy is the currency. Your belief is the architecture. The ritual is just the delivery system.

So the next time your spell seems to stall, don’t panic. Investigate. Ask yourself:

  • Did I cast from authority or from ache – from the spine of my sovereignty, or from the soft bruise of my longing? (A spell cast from ache carries the vibration of ache. Authority carries inevitability.)
  • Did I command, or did I plead? Did my words strike the field like a verdict, or drift into the astral like a hopeful suggestion? (The universe does not respond to “pretty please.” It responds to “this is done.”)
  • Did I take advantage of my psychopomp, eg my inner guide between worlds – to the correct frequency, or did I send my spell out with no navigator and hope it found its way? (Psychopomp out of tune is like a compass spinning in fog, more on this coming in a future post.)
  • Did I set parameters that align with my power, or ones that soothe my doubt? Did I choose timing that reflects my authority, or timing that comforts my insecurity? (Parameters are not safety blankets. They are structural commands.)
  • Did I cast from sovereignty or from wound, from the throne of my being, or from the echo of an old story I haven’t healed yet? (Wounded casting summons wounded outcomes.)
  • Did I remember that even the Gods are tools – amplifiers of my will, not the authors of it – or did I hand them the steering wheel and hope they’d drive me somewhere nice? (The Gods assist. They do not substitute.)
  • Did my pointing hand vector the command clearly, or did I gesture like I was trying to order a drink in a noisy bar? (A sloppy point sends a sloppy spell. The projective digit is a wand – not a suggestion.)
  • Was my command structured like a directive, or like a cosmic “if you don’t mind”? (The universe does not respond to “if you don’t mind.” It responds to “this is the outcome.”)
  • Did I encode the spell with the correct voltage eg. the energetic force behind the instruction, or did I whisper a command that needed to be thundered? (Voltage is not volume. It’s certainty.)
  • Did I collapse the timeline with my authority, or did I secretly expect it to take ages because that’s what everyone told me? (Instant magick is possible. Your disbelief is often the only delay.)
  • Did I issue a command, or did I outsource the responsibility to the universe and hope it would “figure it out”? (The universe is not your personal assistant. It mirrors your clarity.)
  • Did I align my will, body, breath, and belief – or did I cast with only one of those systems online? (Magick requires coherence. A fractured witch casts fractured spells.)
  • Did I check whether my desire was actually mine, or was I casting from inherited wounds, ancestral scripts, or emotional reflex? (Most “wants” are trauma wearing a costume.)
  • Did I use the correct occult posture – the internal stance of “this is already done” – or did I cast while energetically slouching? (Authority is posture. The universe reads posture.)
  • Did I command the timeline, or did I let the timeline command me? (A witch who fears delay creates delay.)
  • Did I cast with the expectation of inevitability, or the hope of possibility? (Hope is a weak battery. Inevitability is a generator.)
  • Did I check whether my spell was coherent, or did I send mixed signals like a witch trying to flirt with the universe while crying? (Mixed signals create mixed manifestations.)
  • Did I remember that magick doesn’t have to take time, that time is often the by‑product of my own misalignment, not the universe’s schedule? (Instant magick is not rare because it’s difficult — it’s rare because witches don’t claim it.)

Because the truth is, magick always works. The question is whether it’s working for you or on you.

Actionable Takeaways for the Witch‑Investigator

  • Audit your energy signature: Before casting, check whether your desire comes from sovereignty or from wound.
  • Command, don’t request:The universe responds to authority, not apology.
  • Attune your psychopomp: Align your inner guide with the task; it’s your energetic courier (we’ll delve deeper into what I mean by psychopomp in a future post).
  • Set parameters wisely: Timeframes should serve your power, not your anxiety.
  • Laugh at the lag: Humour breaks energetic tension and restores flow.
  • Refine your intention: If your desire can’t be stated cleanly, the spell can’t travel cleanly.
  • Choose the right medium: Fire for speed, water for emotion, earth for stability, air for clarity, spirit for transformation.
  • Ground after casting: Your body is the anchor. If you don’t ground, your spell floats like a balloon with no string…make sure you know where you are sending it first though.
  • Record your workings: Patterns reveal themselves long before results do.
  • Recast with sovereignty: If needed, adjust the angle, not the identity. You’re not “trying again.” You’re refining the architecture of your will.

In the end, this is the part most witches avoid because it demands honesty: your magick is only ever as precise, as immediate, and as inevitable as you are. Not your tools. Not your altar. Not your herbs or your planetary hours. Not even your gods – these are all amplifiers, extensions of your will, not the arbiters of it. The accountability sits with the practitioner. Cast with the clarity of your intention, the coherence of your energy, the divine authority of your voice, the steadiness of your psychopomp, and the courage to command from sovereignty rather than wound.

When you claim that level of dominion, when your command is a demand, when your will is aligned rather than aching, when your agency is intact and unapologetic – the universe doesn’t stall, hesitate, or “get back to you later.” It moves. Instantly. Directly. Unmistakably. And if it doesn’t, then the work is not out there in the cosmos; it’s in you. That is the witch’s path. That is the craft. That is the truth no one wants to say out loud – but every witch who rises eventually learns. So point your finger, proudly and without doubting your power my witchy warrior, this world needs more Witches who are ready to embrace their power!

Blessed Be xo
